I use MCE remotes/sensors and irman serial sensors with universal remotes.
Well actually I use universal remotes for everything and just taught the
remotes the MCE codes where needed. Both work very well, although you'll
probably have to roll your own lirc for irman since various distros ship
broken lirc packages for irman. The serial irman devices are nice because
you can run them a (really) long distance without a repeater. I haven't had
any problems with interference but I don't have a plasma or LCD TV so I
can't speak to that, although I do have flourescent lighting and that isn't
an issue with either.
