I think a lot of the pre-install, post-install problems people have 
don't  tend to have much to do with mythtv, in fact, as evidenced in 
your second paragraph. I might be wrong, but getting hardware working, 
getting your OS up to date, etc., all seem to be harder. Installing myth 
is down to a button click for a lot of distros now. Compiling from 
source is pretty easy too. It will tell you what dependencies you're 
missing.
Last time I installed it pretty much auto-configured everything.
