Because of the nice 'auto-loading' of whatever pulseaudio needs.

if alsa is OK and you have multiple cards, edit default.pa.
dusable automagic loading.
and insert stuff like:
load-module module-alsa-sink device_id=0
load-module module-alsa-source device_id=0
where 0 is the cardnumber you want.
