This is sub-pixel smoothing. I had written a bit of an explanation,
but I'll just say how to turn it off on Mac OS X:
- Open System Preferences
- Go to Appearance
- Set "Font smoothing style" to "Standard - best for CRT"

Note that this only takes effect in newly launched applications.
