Just to follow up for the archives, in case anyone is interested. I've
finished this calibration, using Avia II, and everything looks a _lot_
better. I was pretty surprised to discover how poorly I'd set things up
myself; I had contrast and sharpness way too high, and brightness was
jacked up to compensate, so I was losing a lot of detail at the high
end. My colours were rather off, too.

In addition, I didn't realize quite how poor the PVR500 was until I
hooked up my DVD player to it via svideo. It introduces a lot of noise.

Next project: get up on the roof and wire up my antenna so I can start
using my HDHomeRun!
