Are you saying the gzip and bzip2 binaries were corrupted?  Were you running
your backup job as root?  That's the only way I can see that happening...which
is why you avoid running as root as much as you can.  mysqldump doesn't need to
run as root; as long as you authenticate as a MySQL user with suitable
privileges, it doesn't care what system user it runs under.
