I've got monit set to poll every 120 seconds.  I also had another 
machine on the network checking it as well (Simon is already checking my 
mail & web servers at data centre - so what was one more task).  It used 
to check every 2 minutes, but I've set that back to 5 minutes, and now 
things are much more stable.
