the backend is running as root - so the permissions should be ok...

Nope - not one...

ok I did the previous lines and the output is now slightly different for
lsmod | grep cx88
cx88_dvb 15301 0
cx88_vp3054_i2c 6337 1 cx88_dvb
cx8802 17477 1 cx88_dvb

btcx_risc 7753 2 cx8802,cx88xx
videobuf_dvb 8389 1 cx88_dvb
videobuf_dma_sg 14277 4 cx88_dvb,cx8802,cx88xx,videobuf_dvb
videobuf_core 17349 4 cx8802,cx88xx,videobuf_dvb,videobuf_dma_sg
videodev 27713 2 cx88xx,snd_tea575x_tuner
v4l2_common 18497 2 cx88xx,videodev
i2c_core 21057 7
cx88_vp3054_i2c,cx88xx,i2c_algo_bit,tveeprom,dvb_pll,mt352,i2c_viapro
The two missing are cx8800 and that brings in compat_ioctl32

unloading and loading cx88-dvb did not change things - I still get the message
from the frontend that
mythtv: could not connect to socket
mythtv: no such file or socket
