Check if you have 'OpenGL sync' enabled in Myth's playback settings,
and disable it if you do.  That's  the one thing that I imagine
mplayer wouldn't be doing that myth would, and misbehaving OpenGL can
easily lock up a system.

Also, if you're able to ssh in from another computer, try launching
mythfrontend from the ssh session instead:
DISPLAY=:0 mythfrontend --verbose playback

That way you should be able to read the log output right up to the
moment it freezes.
