AFAIK this generalization comes from devices that do format conversion
poorly. Some dvd players are able to provide 1080i or p signals but the
picture looks worse than feeding 720i to the tv and letting the tv convert.
And it can happen vice versa.

I think for this audience, that doesn't apply. By reading dvds into
your computer and letting xine/mplayer/myth do the conversion you send
the signal to the TV/monitor in its native resolution and get
excellent results.
