Steve,

You need to rebuild lirc modules upon a kernel upgrade in feisty.  Look
at the very bottom of the Lirc guide:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Install_Lirc_Feisty

It has directions how to rebuild the kernel modules for feisty.

In gutsy, lirc modules are shipped with all the kernel images, so you
won't run into this again after upgrading later.
