I think the biggest win would be if this allowed them to arrange
things so that all DB access went through the backend. Having the
frontends talking to the DB directly adds another level of
complication -- you have to configure access control in MySQL, and
you have to make sure the MySQL port is open on any firewalls between
the two systems. Better to embed that in the same control channel
MythTV is already using, in my opinion.
