The whole "I can't change the settings" thing still bugs me, but I'm not
worried about it anymore...

The problem, as Mr. McDonald noted earlier, was that I had video4linux
installed.  I removed all traces of it, ran a depmod, rebooted, and
solved the problem on at least one of the backends.  Now for the other
one...

This was a *very* nasty problem to debug...
