Well, it's funny you should mention this, Ryan.  :-)

The drive(s) in question are 4 Seagates; 2 200s, 2 500s.  Near the top
of drive 1/4 (a 200 which also had the boot partition on it) is ...
something which when I try to even read those blocks, causes IDE
controllers to lock up.  

Hard.

The Linux ATA driver loses track of the idea that there's still
*hardware* underneath it when I do.  Two separate motherboards, SuSE,
DSL, Spinrite 6; always in the same place.

What I'm about to do (when I get back from a very pricey trip to
Jersey) is to track down a matching 200GB, and try DDing the top and
bottom stripes off from their respective ends, and then just fsck the
remains.

Problem is: they're all LVM PV's and I can't figure out how to get LVM
not to screech bloody murder when they're not *all* hooked up.

Suggestions welcome.
