[mythtv-users] External DVD Drive

Desktop cases are hard to find these days, and I want one to fit into my cabinet. However, the form factor of the only desktop case(s) I can find are too small to fit a motherboard of 4 PCI slots (suitable for tv/sound cards and future expansion). Therefore, I'm throwing a tower case on its side behind the cabinet doors, with an external dvd drive poking out on one of the shelves. As far as I'm aware, that'll be a USB2.0 device.
So, the point; do external dvd drives work fine with linux/mythtv/knoppmyth? Will I have any trouble here? Will it act like a normal internal drive, or will it appear under a different /dev node? etc.
Also, while I'm here - will the internals (particularly harddrives) suffer any damage from being on their side?
Thanks.
