Well, you have to have *some* kind of MTA running if you're going to  
get local system mail.  A lot of distributions have nightly jobs that  
email stuff to root.

If a spammer gets into the box, whether or not it has an MTA pre- 
installed isn't going to affect things much.  It's not like there's a  
shortage of purpose-built spam sending software.  Much of the spam I  
get is from software that's clearly just spewing pre-scripted SMTP  
commands, not "real" MTAs.
