Unless I misunderstand what you mean, I am doing this with my desktop
(not a backend, just a sometimes-frontend). I have a Matrox G450 AGP
card (the system is about 6 years old), and have X configured NOT to
use Xinerama (I like to control the two monitors / desktops
independently).

I have to run the frontend on the primary monitor (which is the better
monitor, 19" CRT @ 1600x1200), leaving me to do work on the smaller
17" LCD @ 1280x1024.

It works well (for me, at least)... although my system is slightly
underpowered these days... intensive operations in my work can make
the video skip or stutter (might be a problem if you're also
encoding), and playing the video might slow down my work.... may or
may not be of any concern / consequence for you, though...

But yes, it can work.

Can't help you there; PCI Express didn't exist when I bought my system... :)
