[mythtv-users] 1080i playback on 720p display help needed

I've got a Mitsubishi HC 1500 projector that does native 720p. I've got a
core2 3Ghz machine with an nvidia 6200 connected to it via dvi->hdmi. The
display looks great, the X mode is correct. When I play 720p footage it looks
great.
I've got mythdora install and an hdhomerun tuner connected to my cable system.
Most local HD channels are 1080i on the cable. The system records and plays
them back without a problem, but I can't seem to get it deinterlaced right.
I've tried all the deinterlace options under setup->playback, and they don't
seem to make any difference.
I also tried a couple of custom filters, the invert one worked, so I know
something works. It did not work if I put it at the end of the list.

I'm wondering when the deinterlace is applied, before or after scaling down to
my 720 display? I haven't found any mention of that or if there's a way to
control it.
playing back 1080i with mplayer -vf pp=lb looks great. Is there a way to use
mplayer instead of mythtv's internal player?
Any other suggestions I could try?
