i am using knoppmyth R5. I tried to use command /etc/init.d/mysql
restart. which then reports failed. I checked the log files in
/var/log and none of them seemed to report any mysql errors and the
log files for mysql were all blank, so no help there. I tired looking
in the directroy /var/run/mysqld/ as suggested by another post and i
got the following error:

EXT3-fs error (device hda 1): ext3_readdir: directory #479638 contains
a hole at offset 0

the directroy /var/lib/mysql seems to be fine though.
