AFAIK, you are right that this isn't possible.

Virgin Media (Smellywest/Clueless & Witless) apparently use totally  
non-standard encryption/carrier methods - such that a DVB-C card won't  
pick up the channels.

Having said that, it's been about 2 years since I looked at it, so  
things could very easily have changed.
