Ah! I think I found the answer. I had to make sure the following:

Section "Module"
    Load           "dbe"
    Load           "extmod"
    Load           "fbdevhw"
    Load           "glx"
    Load           "record"
    Load           "freetype"
    Load           "type1"
EndSection

is in my xorg.conf. For some reason I only had 'glx' in that section.
Now the performance seem to be much better. I'll check it some more
but the problem seem to be solved.
Hope this'll help to somebody like me fighting with his first NVidia
experience. :)
