I have two 311's, and they do have the screen saver. Perhaps you have
yours set not to automatically download firmware updates, so you
never got the feature (which may be the best way to leave it!)

Yes. That's the real reason I bought it. When LIRC is generating the
carrier signal for a simple IR LED emitter, it can get interrupted by
other things that happen on the system. The result is that tuning
will sometimes fail. Dish's receivers are especially susceptible to
this problem because they use a higher-than-average carrier frequency.
