Just the regular reminder needed that for many people, especially those
in California, the electricity to run any always-on computer will often
be the most expensive item, though of course in some cases displays will
cost much more.

In California for above average electicity users, 1 watt on for 1 year costs
$2.70, so a 100 watt computer costs $831 over a 3 year lifespan.

These small low-cost computers here are generally good players in this
game. Ordinary desktop systems are not. If you want to play HDTV,
definitely look hard at the newer processors which give more power for
less wattage, like the core 2 duo, or with more limited choice, the very
small number of mobile core 2 motherboards available.

Or of course consider having the system not always-on. Then power will
not be nearly as much of a concern.

In a complex system, consider having all tuner cards and disks in a
single master backend, and then have frontends you can power off and
on as needed with suspend mode.
