They work fine with mplayer.  That sounds like a Microsoft "solution".

Yes.  This is as described in the wiki.  Comparing to what happened
before I had this file (exactly the same problem), I don't think it's
needed at all.

Why the --disables?  Does it work if you don't set them?

That might stop it from searching in other places (it looks in
/usr/local somewhere first), so I'll probably set it once things are
running.  Since it's finding the library, this difference isn't the
cause of the problem.

Yes, forgot to say that.  That's been done.
