more for experimentation purposes?

I would suggest a) waiting until you know what the production codecs
will be/require in terms of processing power, and b) as fast a system
as you can build for non-MPEG2 HD, as I do not think current Linux
video driver support offers acceleration for formats other than
MPEG-2, such as h264.
