Forgive me if you already covered this earlier in the thread, but:
are you sure 1280x768 is the closest you can get?  I run 1360x768 on
an NVIDIA 6150.  My tv does 1:1 pixel mapping, but even if you're
still scaling, I would think getting closer is better (1360 v. 1280).
