And if you read the (entire) thread I referenced, you'll see that it
does so using very similar algorithms (although--at least according to
Franco--doing it yourself with ALSA provides much higher quality audio
than using the amp's internal "upconvert, and I'm guessing you have the
same amp he does).

Actually, I haven't explained about #1104. You'd have to write the 7.1
channel support for it, because it doesn't yet have it--therefore, you
could decide how to invent the non-existant information (if you have
some approach that's better than just duplicating channels).
