I agree- my 1.4GHz clocked sempron handles 576p with ease.

Check that the BIOS has the video card set to use AGP rather than PCI. 
Also, you could try the nvidia proprietary driver instead of the open 
source one.  Though I guess you are if you got XvMC working.
