I've experienced this before, and would like to get to the bottom of
it as well.  A previous post of mine to this list about this never got
any traction.

My Via EPIA ME6000 takes a good 15-20 seconds to start the player.
Once playing it seems very responsive, and channel changes are
actually faster than my 1.8Ghz system.

Happens both as a remote frontend and a combination system, so it
doesn't seem to be network related.

This seems to be a problem on systems with slow CPU's, and looks like
it's a new "feature" in .20, .19 was not as bad.
