There's nothing stopping you. The backend server can be run as root or
as a normal user - the caveat here is ensuring that the normal user
has access to the recording hardware which may require updating udev
rules. Many users run mythfrontend (the client GUI) as non-root - it
connects to the backend running on a local or remote machine, and can
be run in a window if required. Have mythbackend run as as system
daemon (i.e. all the time), and start mythfrontend whenever you want
to watch your recordings, Live TV, videos, DVDs or music.
