I guess it depends on how long you want to keep stuff. DVDs, especially
the recordable type, are also very susceptible to damage.

Certainly workable. Even a single RAID5 array is safe from a single disk
failure, although I have seen controller or even cable failures take out
an entire array.
I use DLT tape, but that's not something most home users have available.
It's also not very cost-effective, as a single tape is close to $100 for
20-40 GB (depending on the drive). You also have to have at least one
"cleaning tape". I wouldn't use the stuff if I didn't have it "left
over" from something else.
But not much video is totally irreplaceable these days. I can't really
think of anything worth "heroic" efforts to preserve. Basically if it
was ever broadcast you can get a copy, though you might have to pay a
bit for it.
