I have 1Gb of memory and mythfrontend is using 320MB virtual and 190 
resident.  I don't think memory/swapping is the cause.

When when running top, I don't see any CPU spikes when I get the pauses 
.... so I'm a bit stumped at what could cause this.

I will try the lite version of the theme, and see if it makes a 
difference.  Also, I don't see the slowness when the livetv preview 
isn't displayed... so maybe there's something caused by the preview???
