This is no longer the case with a current 0.20-fixes or SVN trunk
mythfrontend (i.e. the frontend was fixed, not the theme--so mass
updating of themes isn't necessary). In
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/commits/272204#272204 (for
0.20-fixes and in the changesets referenced by that commit for SVN
trunk), Stuart Morgan fixed theme image handling in the frontend. Some
quick testing done by Janne showed memory usage after the patch was less
than half what it was before the patch when using blootube-wide (about
40% of pre-fix memory usage). (At 1920x1080, blootube-wide should use
about 220MB after the patch. At lower resolutions, memory usage will be
decreased proportionally.)

And--even if using a different theme--make sure you've updated a version
after the changes.

Definitely true.
