Can you play the mp3 files externally to mythtv and does it have sound 
then? How about a bit more info on your setup? Distro, version of 
mythtv? Are you outputting sound to the standard output jack or via 
spdif? Do you have a .asoundrc or asound.conf file?

You say you love it for movies so I will assume that you get sound in 
that mode.
