I haven't tried this for a while, as I've built a new frontend since I
originally reported this. I don't think it stutters for me anymore, but
it still crashes when getting to the title screen.

Previous FE hardware:

CPU: AthlonXP 2500+ (Barton)
Motherboard: Asus A7N8X-Deluxe (rev 2)
Ram: 1GB DDR
Video: Generic NVidia 6200 128MB
ODD: LG IDE DVD drive
OS: Gentoo
Kernel: 2.6.20

Current FE hardware:

CPU: Core 2 Duo 6420
Motherboard: Asus P5B-VM (I think)
Ram: 1GB DDR2
Video: MSI NVidia 7600GS 256MB
ODD: Samsung SATA DVD writer
OS: Gentoo
Kernel: 2.6.21

Both systems were hooked up to a Sony 40X2000 (40" LCD), via a DVI->HDMI
cable, running at the panel's native resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p).

Can you see anything in common here? The "switch off XvMC to watch
DVD's, switch on XvMC to watch High-Def recordings" is lowering the WAF
a bit (although, the overall WAF is steadily rising).
