David, it's my understanding that you with the TV encoders on the
cards you can select different resolutions such as 640x480, 800x600,
but you don't actually go out and manually define a specific modeline
with vertical timings and dot clock and all the other things that can
be tuned exactly to a (usually VGA) monitor.
http://mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/NVidiaProprietaryDriver suggests that
you can only get 4:3 resolutions out of any cards, but fiddling with
the DPI once you get a good, but stretched picture might be
worthwhile.
