Well, this is working again... I think it was a combination of two things:

1) No stopping and starting the frontend after I changed it
[ I thought mythtv had it handled when it blinks out and back after that section ]

2) The fading was new to me, I thought it did all transitions, but now that I have it working I see it is only between menus, not into an actual functional part (like recorded program listings).  So when I was testing, I just check that since it was easiest.

Thanks for the pointer - once again the simpliest explanation is the correct one.

User error.
