For Ubuntu try using checkinstall whcih builds and installs a .deb file 
automagically, and when you use configure try
 .configure --prefix=/usr <rest of configure flags which you need to set 
to match what you're doing>

I am running Mythtv SVN on my Breezy server, no problems!
