Sorry, I am not sitting in front of my backend (which has a pvr 500 in it) 
just now, so I am not sure of the following.

If the test above works, I assume that the device used should be /dev/video0 
, but the frontend's log mentions a /dev/v4l/video0 (see below):

Are you sure that you have selected the right type of encoder card in 
mythtv-setup (2nd menu, it should be something like 'mpeg: pvr x50').
