I'm running Etch, and I just did this yesteday.

1. become root.
2. module-assistant
  - if you don't have module-assistant, apt-get install
    module-assistant
  - step through the menu. Configure your system to compile
    modules. Choose the lirc modules.
  - pick the Streamzap modules
  - let module-assistant compile and install them
4. plug in the USB receiver
5. modprobe lirc_streamzap
6. apt-get install lirc
7. Put in an /etc/lirc/lircd.conf -- I got one from
http://www.kdegraaf.net/contact.html
8. /etc/init.d/lirc start
9. Put in a ~/.lircrc for a test program -- I used xmms
10. Start your test program
11. Point and click.
