There are commercial solutions for this:

There are also RF devices designed to extend IR remote control from
one room to another. It's a bit overkill for just going though a
furniture side but it would probably work.

You could also probably cobble up an IR receiver to an IR emitter
over a wire with a transistor or an op-amp driving the LED.
