Figured it out. When I rebooted one time at install it
reverted back to the previous kernel so I got some
kmdl packages for the wrong kernel. Worked enough to
make me think it was working but would fail every so
often. Figured it out when I installed linux-wlan and
it said I had the wrong sources. Learned a lesson;
blow away the old kernel.
