Wrt to firewire yes, but the centos plus kernel is much more than just
firewire, so you may want to use it anyway.
The reason to use the kmdls instead of the plus kernel is that it uses
the well-known vendor kernel as a base, e.g. all modules but firewire
and the kernel core are from the vendor.
My suggestion is to have both kernels installed, the vendor kernel w/
kmdls and the plus kernel w/o. That way you can easily swicth back and
forth in case you suspect anything.
Note that all kmdls are also shipped for the plus kernels, e.g. you
can still run your nvidia, lirc etc. on the plus kernels.
