On a recent build I have used the auto login functionality of gdm with
a custom .xsession file.
This allows me to auto login the mythtv user and have
mythwelcome/mythfrontend as the application that, when exited (or
segfaulted) causes X to restart. It will then auto login after the
configured delay.
This works well for me, I can login as a different user if I want to
do some maintenance otherwise I just wait for the autologin for
mythtv.
Some helpful info can be found on the wiki, see
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Frontend_Auto_Login .
