You *do* need a resistor and capacitor. If you wire in directly, it
might work but the resistor helps adjusting the impedance and the
capacitor provides a DC isolation. I failed to do that once (I have the
same MB) and almost burned my receiver.
A simple circuit like this is enough.

         100nF
  TTL ----||-----330ohm--+--------- coax S/PDIF signal out
  in                     |
                      100ohm
                         |
 Ground -----------------+--------- coax signal ground
