I seem to recall there was a problem with the 3000 card not reporting
signal strength properly, not sure if this was a hardware or a driver issue.

In any case, "signal strength" reported by digital cards may or may not
be actual RF levels, it often is the BER (Bit Error Rate), which is
somewhat but not totally related to RF signal, as other things like
reflections or interference can effect it.

Obviously the best way to align your antenna is with a signal level
meter or even a spectrum analyzer, but most of us do not own or have
access to these. Some TV sets have signal level display built-in.

If you are going to use a software app to measure level and align an
antenna, make sure you move the antenna very slowly, as the time for a
change to show up can be several seconds.
