My 8500 work fine, in both Ubuntu 7.04, 7.10, and latest 8.xx 
development linux...only issue I have is I cannot
ctrl+alt+f1 into a console....I'm using these distros "out-of-the-box", 
with nv drivers that came with them, I even have dual-monitors working, 
have you tried an ubuntu or even mythbuntu installation?
The interesting thing I've found is that I can "auto-hide" the taskbars, 
and while Myth is playing, I can now access any other program and run it 
ON TOP of the mythtv video playing...sweet!!
