Assuming the "regular way" means connecting your analog cable or the
output of a satellite receiver directly to your TV set:

I'm using PVR-150s and, while I can perceive a slight degradation from
the "regular way", because I know precisely what to look for, nobody
else, most viewers do not see this. In fact, a commercial TiVo shows
more degradation than my Myth setup.

If you get your resolution, bitrate etc. set up properly you can get
very close to the "regular way".

If casual viewers see a problem, I'd guess you have not set things up as
well as they could be.
