Which howto were you referring to?  As far back as I can remember, the
authored ones i've done have been on help.ubuntu.com ?

You'll be happy to see where things are going for Gutsy.  Notice how
there is no mention of building a kernel module, or selecting a
lircd.conf or how you make a lircrc? :)
