Click on the thread icon (the little speech bubble) and it'll  
highlight the whole thing.  Then press delete.

If you want it killed permanently you can always write a rule to do  
so.  I usually don't bother.

Yeah, and digest mode is part of the problem.  There's no way to  
reply to a message embedded in a digest without breaking the thread.
